Well there are many reasons that it started. One is slavery, the South believed that once Abraham Lincoln was elected, he would ban all slavery when he really just wanted to keep it from spreading to the US territories. The next is the difference in culture and economies, the South was an agricultural based society compared to the Industrial north. Next the south felt like they were “losing their voice” when Lincoln was elected. The south felt that it was their right to succeed and that’s the reason that they did. The north fought to preserve the Union, and it hadn’t become a war about slavery until later on when Lincoln believed banning it would save the Union. This is just based on what I learned in APUSH and I hope it helps!
