Because there was a real fear that Iraq would continue on an invade Saudi Arabia as well so the President ordered the XVIII Airborne Corps be sent to help defend the KSA. Invading Saudi Arabia would have potentially given Saddam Hussein control over a large swath of the world's oil reserves.
