Brown convened a covert anti-slavery conference in Canada in May 1858. Brown's anti-slavery constitution was adopted by around 50 of his black and white followers. Brown went beyond talking and making arrangements in December. He overcame the boundary from Kansas into Missouri in a daring raid, when he murdered one slave owner and set 11 slaves free.
