The Union Was Rapidly Changing Amidst Political Upheaval, Fundamental Disagreement on Constitutional Principles, etc. Overall the North and South were too different. The South depended on slave labor and exporting cash crops. While the North had an industrial economy that favored direct taxations, high tariffs, etc.
