Why does Proctor use the phrase, “I will have my life,” instead of “I’ll confess”? in The Crucible

When they force proctor to profess his guilt he only says he's guilty so he won't be sentenced to death. he is saving his own life by saying he is guilty, but he isnt confessing to being guilty hes confessing to save his own life.
