the asthenosphere is the upper part (or you could say layer) of the Mantle on Earth, below the lithosphere (the tough outer layer of the Earth, mainly the crust etc), in which there is relatively low resistance to plastic flow which means that that part of the mantle is easy to move and 'deform' (much like a plastic) and convection is thought to occur.
