Oxygen is inhaled into the lungs for gaseous exchange, to occur between the blood and the alveoli, where oxygen diffuses into the blood; then, binding to haemoglobin of the red blood cells, which is carried away to cells in the body for respiration and CO2 diffuses out of the blood, to be exhaled.

Hope this helps!
