What did the Korean War have to do with the Soviet Union and the United States? Why would these two countries get involved/care about the war in Korea?

Think of it as a proxy war. Small region... But really, this was more so a police action. The Korea's were going to be united in a communist relationship, but the UN sent in troops and supplies to help push back NK.

What did the Korean War have to do with the Soviet Union and the United States? Why would these two countries get involved/care about the war in Korea?
