Lenin did occupy a prominent position in the Communist Party, but he died just a few years after the revolution, when the government was still recovering from chaos.

He was primarily a revolutionary and an intellectual, and contributed immensely to the popularity of Socialism before and after the revolution. Lenin generally believed in moderate government and opposed literal dictatorship, and only resorted to violence against direct enemies that threatened the USSR.
