Because Texas was the furthest point from the Union forces, it would be the last state to experience occupation. As Union troops seized other cities and states farther to the northeast, refugees fled into Texas seeking shelter, and slave owners sent slaves to Texas to avoid liberation by the Union. Texas also played a key role in keeping its ports open and out of the hands of the Union so that much needed supplies could be shipped in for the Confederacy. Little destruction occurred in Texas since it was so far to the southwest, and most battles occurred east of the Mississippi.
