Explanation: The PONS is the respiratory center that controls the rate and depth of breathing in organisms.

Moreover, it has two functional regions; the apneustic center and pnuemotaxic center. These two centers works alternatively in other control the involuntary respiratory process (breathing).

The apneustic center sends signals for initiation of long and deep breaths. Whereas the pnuemotaxic center sends signals to inhibit the process, which in turn allows it to control the respiratory rate.
