The Greek “planktos” means “wandering”, so phytoplankton are “plant-wanderers” because they must drift (“wander”) with the ocean currents. Small animal life that also drifts in the currents makes up the “zooplankton”. Together, phytoplankton and zooplankton are simply referred to as plankton.
