Assume that the stopping distance of a can varies directly with the square of the speed. A van travelling 20 miles per hour can stop in 30 feet. If the van is travelling 24 miles per hour, what is it’s stopping distance?

Explanation:

D = k × speed²

30 = k × 20²

k = 3/40

D = (3/40) × 24²

D = 216/5

= 43.2 feet
