Answer: In 1950, his passport was taken away.

Explanation: This turned out into a big battle for eight years until he finally got his passport back and was able to travel outside the country. The State Department insisted that Robeson should sign an affidavit declaring he was not a member of the Communist Party but was loyal to the United States.

His career was almost over, as over 80 of his concerts were cancelled. The FBI was on his trail and the state department had taken his Passport away. After he got his passport back, some eight years later, he continued to perform and protest for Civil Rights.
