The main characteristic of """"love""""" for a person is the desire for someone elses' welfare, even at the cost of yours. This may be partially redirected or changed when children enter the picture. Another characteristic is that you want that person to always be in your life.

Now this doesn't just apply to a human loving another human, this can apply to animals staying as mates for the rest of their lives, or a human loving their pet(s).

I've, personally, never loved someone as much as I love my animals. They are the light of my life and make my day so much better when I am around them.
