Why was the church so central to the struggle for black freedom?

It starts with the fact that western society and government were built on the back of the (catholic) church. Historically religion and politics were virtually inseparable, as the church held a great deal more power and sway than we are useful now. We can see the remnants of the impact the church left on society especially in America on the money, Declaration of Independence etc.
