In the first step of multiplying 73 × 85, Bethany multiplied 5 by 3, recorded a 5 and "carried a 1." What does that 1 represent? Why was it recorded over the 7? What do we mean by "carried" in this situation?

Answer:

CARRY - a carry is a digit that is transferred from one column of digits to another column of more significant digits

Explanation:

First step of multiplying 73 × 85

Benthany multiplied 5 × 3 = 15

Here 5 is at unit position an 1 is at 10 position

1 is represent 10

5 is represent 5

At multiplication process first we write unit position. other all space value take as carried.

Carry is going to be add in next step multiplication result. here we can write only unit other is going to be again carry, but in last step of multiplication we do not take carry. that's why carried recorded over 7.

CARRY - a carry is a digit that is transferred from one column of digits to another column of more significant digits
