The square deal was to help American get back on there feet. The great depression left many Americans jobless and homeless. Before Theodore the government used Laissez-faire where that government absents from intervening with regulation, privileges, imperialism, tariffs and subsidies. He implemented government jobs to help not only the people of the US but also build the government.
