not really, the axis powers were on the back foot, many had submitted and japan could’ve been defeated in a way that didn’t see countless civilians killed. However, they did still pose a threat and the Japanese were amongst the worst of the axis powers both in power and brutality. So in order to bring them to their knees i suppose you could consider it justified
