In an effort to preserve the balance of power in Congress between slave and free states, the Missouri compromise was passed in 1820 admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state.

Answer:

It was made to satisfy the North and the South

Step-by-step explanation:

The South wanted to become their own country because they wanted to continue slavery and follow their own rules. The North wanted to end slavery and they didn't agree. This was how they satisfied both areas without splitting them into two different countries. I was talking about Missouri of course!

Hope this helps!
