What are the five features of a thesis statement?

• States what you are going to argue or believe in.
• Distinguishes a well thought out paper from a mere retelling of facts and events.
• Helps you stay focused throughout the writing process
• It should be clear and focused
• It should be arguable (that is, if an expert wanted to read your paper, they could argue why your thesis statement may not necessarily be correct.)
• It should reflect your position on a topic.
• Will the reader ask questions like “why?” or “How?”
• Can the reader ask “So what?”, “Who cares?”
• Can an expert say something like “No way!” ?
• Is it clear to the reader what major points you are going to make?
