What is the inheritance of acquired characteristics? What scientist developed this mistaken idea?

The idea of it is that if an organism changes during life in order to adapt to its environment, those changes are passed on to its offspring. However, that isn't the case (proved by Darwin). This theory was made by Jean Baptiste Lamarck.
