Answer: A search engine is a web-based tool that enables users to locate information on the World Wide Web. Popular examples of search engines are Google and Yahoo! A meta search engine is not technically a search engine, but a web portal which aggregates the web search results for a keyword or a phrase of many different search engines using a proprietary algorithm. And a subject directory organizes Internet sites by subject, and is usually maintained.

hope this helped :)
