A network of sensory organs present in aquatic vertebrate organisms used to detect motion, vibration and pressure gradients in ambient water is understood as lateral line system. Like in the fish, the head and on both sides of the body there is a network of tactile sense organs.

The sensory capacity is accomplished by transformed epithelial cells, identified as hair cells, which react to motion-induced displacement and transduce these stimuli by exciting synapses into electrical impulses. Lateral lines play an significant function in the behavior, predation, and orientation of schooling.
