Answer: it is not independent.

Explanation:

Independent means that the first event did not affect the next event.

We know that she first picked a number less than 5 (and keeps it), this can be 1, 2, 3 or 4.

After that, she picked up an odd number.

Now, suppose that the first number shie picked was one of the even numbers.

Then, the probability that the next number was odd is slightly bigger than the case where the first number she picked was an odd number (because in this case there are less odd numbers in the hat)
