In Pennsylvania, state sales tax is used to pay for services provided by the state. The sales tax rates vary by city and county. In Warren County the sales tax rate is 6%; in Allegheny County, the sales tax rate is 7%; and in Philadelphia the sales tax rate is 8%.

A customer returns a book to a book store in Warren County. The book store has another location in Allegheny County, and the customer shops at both locations. The customer’s receipt shows $1.75 tax was charged on a $24.99 item. Was the item purchased at the Warren County store or the Allegheny County store?

Answer:

Allegheny County

Explanation:

6% (or 0.06) of $24.99 is $1.50 (see example below)

7% (or 0.07) of $24.99 is $1.75

8% (or 0.08) of $24.99 is $2.00

Example: 0.06 x 24.99 = 1.4994 or rounded off would equal 1.50
