Why did the people of China settle near the Chang Jiang river

The silt it carries helps fertilize the surrounding lands, making the North China Plain a good place to settle down and grow crops. river is said to have flooded more that 1,500 times, causing much damage and loss of life.

As people in China turned to farming, they began to settle mostly on the North China Plain in Inner China. They grew crops and lived in villages near the Huang He. ... The Chang Jiang Basins were wet and fertile, but heavy rains may have made farming difficult.
