Hearing that Tessa won £25 and she gave her winnings to her five children.

She gave her first child £1 plus 1 / 6 of the money remaining.
She gave her second child £2 plus 1 / 6 of the money remaining.
She gave her third child £3 plus 1 / 6 of the money remaining, and so on...

Without doing any calculations, which child do you think ended up with the most money?

Answer:

  • All the children got equal amount of money
  • Each child received 5 euros.

Explanation:

Tessa won 25 euros.

She gave her winnings to her five children.

1st child got: 1 euro +
(1)/(6) of 24 euros = 5 euros

2nd child got: 2 euros +
(1)/(6) of 18 euros = 5 euros

3rd child got: 3 euros +
(1)/(6) of 12 euros = 5 euros

4th child got: 4 euros +
(1)/(6) of 6 euros = 5 euros

5th child got: 5 euros +
(1)/(6) of 0 euros = 5 euros

The oldest would receive a sixth of the original amount, so s/he would receive the most

1/6 of £25 = £4.17 so that’s what the oldest got.

(£25 - 4.17) • 1/6 = £3.47 so that’s what the second oldest got

(£25 - [4.17 + 3.47]) • 1/6 = £2.93 so that’s what #3 got

(£25 - [4.17 + 3.47 + 2.93]) • 1/6 = £2.41 so that’s what number 4 got

And the remaining 12.98 went to the 5th child
