Why is discharge of water in a drainage basin more at the mouth of the basin

Some rainwater penetrates directly into the earth, depending on the circumstances of the drainage basin. This water will either stay underground, slowly moving downhill until it reaches the basin, or it will permeate deeper into the soil and condense into groundwater aquifers.
