chemical weathering is the gradual disintegration of rocks as a result of chemical reactions. when rain falls on the rock surface, the water combines with the carbon dioxide to produce a weak carbonic acid. water being the main cause of chemical weathering, the small amount of carbon dioxide that in the atmosphere dissolves in rain water. the water falls on the rock and the rain water moves on the soil surface thereby picking up additional carbon dioxide from debris. in this process rocks are broken down into smaller particles.
