Question:

The Rogers family and the Ross family each used their sprinklers last summer The Rogers family's sprinkler was used for 30 hours. The Ross family's Sprinkler was used for 15 hours. There was a combined total output of 1100 L water. What was the water output rate for each sprinkfer if the sum of the two rates was 60 L per hour ?

Answer:

x = 46.66667 L/hr, y = 13.33333 L/hr

Explanation:

Let sprinker's rate for Rogers be x and let rate for Ross be y

Sum of rates = x + y = 60--------eqn 1

Total output by both families = 15x + 30y = 1100-------eqn2

Solving simultaneously,

from equation 1, x = 60-y

substituting into eqn 2

15(60-y) + 30y = 1100

900 - 15y + 30y = 1100

collecting like terms

15y = 200

y = 13.33333 L/hr

x = 60 - 13.33333 = 46.66667 L/hr
