a) 2x + 3y = 2. (1)
x - 2y = 8. (2)

modify (1) to be: 2x = 2-3y
= x = 1-1.5y

put (1) into (2) so: (1-1.5y)-2y = 8
-3.5 y = 7
3.5 y = -7
y = -7/3.5
y=-2
