A baby is regarded very large when the baby weighs 4.5kg and above. It is known as fetal macrosomia.

Due to the large size of the baby, there could be cephalopelvic disproportion where the foetal head and maternal pelvis are not proportionate to enable escape of the baby through the birth canal.

Giving birth to large babies can also cause perineal tears in the woman as the baby looks for more room(space) to escape.

This could also result to shoulder dystocia where the foetal head escapes the birth canal and the shoulder get stuck by the pelvic bones.

Another complication that could occur is birth injury on the baby like neonatal asphyxia, post partum hemorrhage due to weakness of the uterine muscles.
