To bring a supertanker to a stop, it’s engines are typically cut off about 25 km from port. Why is it so difficult to stop or turn a supertanker

This is because a supertanker has a lot of mass, creating lots of inertia. This can be explained by Newton’s first law of motion, which says that any object wants to keep doing what it’s doing. Objects with greater mass have greater inertia, so it takes more force to change that object’s motion.
