The groups go up and down, and tell you the Valence electrons

Periods go left and right, which tells you energy levels

You can typically tell valence electrons by group number, which are all the same except for what is in the transition elements of the table.

Barium -2
Lead-4
Bismuth-5
Potassium-1
Tin-4
Iodine-7
Xenon-8

Step-by-step explanation:

Groups are vertical columns so they go up and down. They also tell you the energy level.

Periods are horizontal rows so they go left and right. They also tell you the valence electron.

I don't have a good periodic table right now but you should be able to figure it out now.
