Answer: Gate control theory

Explanation: The gate theory of pain first proposed by Robert Melzack and Patrick Wall offers a physiological explanation on how non-painful inputs can override or mitigate painful inputs by closing the nerves fibers (gate) thereby reducing the painful sensation reaching the central nervous system by decreasing the activity of the transmission cell. When activity of the transmission cell is permitted, we have an open gate, this allows the sensation of pain.
