Answer:

Small molecules and water are the easiest things to be transported across the cell membrane. Bigger molecules need different mechanisms for transportation like the help of carrier molecules. Molecules which move along the concentration gradient can pass through without requiring any energy. Such mechanism of transfer is known as passive transport. Other molecules move against the concentration gradient and require energy to pass through the cell membrane. Such mechanism is known as active transport.
