Fossils. You would look for fossils remains, as an evidence, that of plants or animals you would expect to find at you location, and those that are out of place.

In India, because is situated near equator, we could expect to find tropical flora fossils, not polar flora fossils in its rock. The polar fossils support the theory that India was formed near the south pole.
