John Brown was an abolitionist extremist who worked his whole life to bring freedom to slaves. Other side of the picture is that he spread a killing spree in Kansas to prevent it from becoming a slave state and tried to create a military of slaves at Harpers Ferry. Therefore for abolitionists, he was a martyr but for pro-slavery southerners, he was a misguided fanatic.
