The indigenous population in the Mata Atlantica (the jungle that was first encountered by Europeans) that stretched from the South of Brazil in the actual location of Rio de Janeiro up to Salvador de Bahi, were the "Tupies".

They were organized in tribes, sometimes even into confederations, and in some parts of the south mixed with Guarani tribes (then forming the Tupi Guarani group). Many Tupi were enlisted by the Europeans as auxiliaries, but would eventually start to see its population diminished due to slavery, diseases and war.
