In a certain hexagon, the two shortest sides have the same length. The length of each remaining side is 2 inches more than the length of each shortest side. The perimeter of the hexagon is 38 inches. What are the lengths of the sides of the hexagon?

Hexagon has 6 sides

Let x be the shortest side

length of the longest side is x+2

there are 2 shortest sides and 4 longest sides

To find perimeter we add all the sides


Perimeter = 2(x) + 4(x+2)


38= 2(x) + 4x+8


38=6x+8

Subtract 8 from both sides


30=6x

divide both sides by 6

x=5

length of the shortest side = 5 inches

length of the longest side is 7 inches
