Punjab and Haryana are India's major rice-growing states, making up for about 15% of the country's rice production. In these regions, the high productivity of rice cultivation is due to two main factors.

  • The first one is a choice to mix different rice varieties, especially high-yielding ones (that is to say, producing plentifully and resulting in lots of financial gain). Indian farmers chose to plant these profitable crops in more places, too.
  • While the country is liable to droughts, Punjab and Haryana have become particularly drought-resilient. Substantial investments have been made in irrigation infrastructure in these states, mostly groundwater pumping.
