Why was Captain John Smith so strict with the Jamestown settlers

They didn’t do their share working, so he would threaten them by saying, “He do not work, don’t eat.” the settlers were not uses to the manual labor so they needed it to keep working. the supplies there were very few, so they needed to work fast so when winter came they wouldn’t all die.
