A large cell is less efficient at moving nutrients and wastes out because of its large volume compared to a small cell. In a large cell, waste has farther to go from the center of the cell to the cell membrane than in a smaller cell, and nutrients coming in have farther to travel in a larger cell than in a smaller cell.
