Hamlet pretends to be mad to keep others from knowing what he is truthfully planning. He is trying to find a way to kill his Uncle Claudius. Hamlet has to have a good reason for killing his uncle, Claudius. Since a madman can get away with quite more than a sane man, people will overlook his behaviour if he seems to be an insane individual. Since he cannot trust anyone regarding what his father's ghost instructed of him. He has to find proof that Claudius has undoubtedly killed his father. As a cause of feigning mad, Hamlet can buy time.
