Explain the role of ion channels. Why are ion channels necessary?

Ions are specialized in proteins in the plasma membrane that provides a passage through which charged ions can cross the plasma membrane down their electrochemical. Ions channels are necessary because they facilitar the passive movements of ions down gradient and across lipid bilayers in cells
