How does wearing a life jacket make it easier to float when wearing one actually makes you heavier?

Buoyancy is the upward force we need from water ti stay afloat. The trapped air in the life jacket weighs much, much less than the weight of the water so the water pushes up harder than the life jaket pushes down. This is what lets the life jacket to help you float.
