Because John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry ended up generating an intense reaction in both the South and the North. Southerners eventually felt apprehensive of the possibility of other violent plots actually happening. They saw Brown as a terrorist, looking as though he would destroy their civilization, but support for secession ended up growing
