we can use the variable x to represent the number since it's currently unknown
seven more than the number can be represented as x + 7
we can find the sum of both by adding them
x + x + 7 = 43
2x + 7 = 43
-7 -7
2x = 36
we divide by 2 on both sides to isolate x
