1) In Common Sense by Thomas Paine, he focuses primarily on the relationship between the Colonies and Great Britain. In his introduction, he says he feels that there is 'a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong'; which 'gives it a superficial appearance of being right'; (693). He is alluding to the relationship, also calling it a 'violent abuse of power'; (693). Jefferson says something of similar regard towards Great Britain, saying, that the king had established an 'absolute tyranny'; over the states. They both believe that the governance of Britain was oppressive and unjust and it's better they seperate The commonly shared notion between the two documents is that a government ought to meet the needs of the people. And if this responsibility is not kept, and power is abused, the people have every right to oppose the authorities (ie. the king or anyone holding the seat of governance)
